Location: TThe European Humanities University is located in the building of the former Augustinian monastery of the end of the 18th century, in one of the most picturesque and prestigious districts of Vilnius – the Old Town, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (Savičiaus Str. 17).

In 1808, the building became part of the Theological Seminary of Vilnius University. Up until 1842, the building was used for the Vilnius Theological Academy.

The European Humanities University was founded as a non-state university in Minsk in 1992, and became the first university in Belarus modeled on Western colleges and universities. It was based on the fundamental study of the humanities and social sciences. The initiators of the project sought to create a new independent university that would contribute to the revival of the values of the Europeancivilization  in Belarus in the context of the  transition from totalitarianism to an open and free civil society.

Because of attempts by the Belarusian authorities to undermine the academic freedoms and autonomy of EHU, the University was forced to cease its activities in Belarus. On the 27th  of  July 2004, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus abolished EHU’s license for the provision of educational services.

Thanks to the support of the Lithuanian government, the European Commission, governments, USA and EU non-governmental organizations  and foundations, EHU was able to resume its activities in Lithuania. In 2006, the University received the official status of a private Lithuanian university. The University engages with students from Belarus and the Eastern European region. EHU is a member of the Bologna Process. Over the years of the University’s existence, about 4000 diplomas have been issued.

The University is a promising scientific and information center of F. Skaryna’s Cultural Path.
